I don't think we're in Kansas anymore Toto...

So it seemed very appropriate to write a little piece on Untin as that appears to be where the current party (please note they have no snazzy name, unlike all the really good parties of adventurers) have decided to commit suicide.

The origins of the jungles of Untin are lost to time.  What is known is that some form of major magical catastrophe hit the area thousands of years ago and caused the jungles to rise up and devour the civilization which had existed in the area prior to the event.  It was the same event that brought about the local desert area where once was a flourishing ecosystem.

Untin was the birth place of civilization as there were cities filled with men and other humanoids before the Eastern Reaches were even embroiled in the monster war.  Whatever the catastrophe that caused the fall of the civilization the fall was swift and magical in nature.  Many have reported detecting enormously powerful vestiges of magic throughout the jungles with no apparent cause or source.

For millennium the jungles were ignored; mostly due to the large number of dinosaurs and Green Dragons which made their homes there.  Eventually the adventuring party known as the Champions of Porth entered the jungles and emerged without a number of their party, including the then Dwarven King - Marlowe Barak.  Following this the borders of Untin were closed and began being patrolled by Justician Knights - entering the borders was punishable by death.

The Justician's nearly ended up at War with the Dwarves over the death of Marlow Barak, however a peace was brokered and the Dwarven nations sent their greatest builders to erect an impenetrable wall around the jungle and the unknown terrors of Untin were left to history.

We're Getting the Band Back Together...

There have been a number of famous adventuring parties over the course of Porth’s history and as the next part of these articles it would seem appropriate to list some of them and remember some of their exploits.  At various points they these groups have been both hated and loved, seeing as the old adage of “everyone loves a winner” could not be truer than when it is applied to the ramifications of so called “heroes”.

The Spear Lords

A mostly fighter based group, although their one wizard Tallagel is recognised as the finest battle caster that there has ever been, who are remembered as the first party to return from Von Island and bring the news that as well as an abundance of dinosaurs living in the Jungles of the island beneath is home to thousands of dark elf Drow.

Their name derives from the original leader of the band using an enchanted spear in battle with great skill.  The spear was known as heart seeker as it could be thrown very easily and caused devastating damage at times.  The entire party were believed lost during the Dark Cleric’s Reign of Terror.

Don't throw those bloody spears at me!

Company of the Mist Walkers

This group were just an ordinary collection of mercenaries hired by the cleric Alannah Sapharis until their adventures brought them into contact with the Demi plane of Dread – Ravenloft.  The group became unwitting pawns of the Azalin as he tried to escape the plane.  The group emerged from the mists which had become permanently attached to Porth at the time although they discovered they were centuries out of time and all they knew had gone.

Shortly after their emergence from the mists they became known as the Company of the Mist Walkers.  Bregg Malen, a tactical genius and the leader of the group, got the party embroiled with Ramalin Delgarto’s Abjuration Agenda and they disappeared into the jungles of Untin.  Only Ramalin has been seen since so the Company’s whereabouts remain unknown.

So there I was high born lady with prospects, get mixed up with an
adventurer - lost everything!

Warriors of the Vale

An ancient organisation which are rumoured to still exist in the form of a secret society of some kind dedicated to the protection of the Southern lands of Thane.  Their most famous deed was the apparent destruction of the Dark Cleric after his first rampage at the hands of the group’s leader Erinmore.

If the Warriors of the Vale still exist they did not feature in the final battle with the Dark Cleric that would bring about the current Age of Despair.  However, if they are indeed working as a secret organisation they may well have had a part in Ratrimack’s downfall that no one is aware of.

Nock, draw, fire.  Shit forgot AIM!

Knights of Justicia

Not really an adventuring company as such, the Knights of Justica were renowned as the protectors and peacekeepers throughout Porth for centuries until their fall from grace following the conviction and execution of their leader Saint Lendorian Cord for treason and heresy.

There are many historians who believe that Lendorian was used as a scape goat at the time to cover up a greater crime by others but there is a lack of evidence for this theory due to the destruction of documentation from that time.

The Knights of Justicia were divided up into chapters although the full details of who this worked are lost.  Occasionally you may well come across a modern day Justician Knight.  This is a warrior who can trace their ancestry back to the high days of Justicia and can continue to wear the Sigel’s and armour of the knights.

Is anyone else finding this chafes?

Heroes of Maldar Forest

In the same way as the Mist Walkers this band of adventurers had come together before they became the Heroes of Maldar Forest.  Basically, a bunch of neophyte adventurers found themselves in the middle of an undead invasion of the Oron Islands by the Lich-Lord Fearson.  Against all odds they managed to hold the line against a massive army of undead until support arrived and managed to turn the tide against the invasion.

All of the Heroes of Maldar Forest who lived long enough to retire did so to the Oron Islands which are populated by their distant relatives today.  Their number included Xorin the Wizard, Jenna Elvesbane, Kalis, Hannah and Malakesh.

Maldar Forest - undead free since 1847p.w.

Champions of Porth

No adventuring company can boast quite so many legendary members to its ranks or to have such a marred reputation.  Notable members include Cortan (Master-mage of Porth), Ratrimack (before he became the Dark Cleric), Marlowe Barrak (King of the Dwarves), Arturio Deg (Prince of the Elves), Draegan (Lady of Shadows - Goddess of destruction), Alasander Cortalis (General of the Gods), Saint Lendorian Cord (ruler of Justicia) and Bruce the Troglodyte.

The fact that the Champions did an immense amount of good can never be argued; they stopped Elcore from destroying everything, helped fight the forces of evil across the entire world and stood as an inspiration to a generation.  However, Ratrimack proved to be a master of manipulation and as the Dark Cleric slaughtered millions of innocents to feed his army of death.  Cortan continues to be the most powerful mage in existence and has lived way beyond his years.  Lendorian’s disgrace is mentioned above and the Bruce/Thor feud is still the key element in the events of the holocaust where the very existence of Porth was changed forever.

Nothing like the Champions of Porth...

I hope that you have enjoyed this little guide to the various major adventuring bands that have and in some cases still do populate the World of Porth.

Not exactly Hogwarts...

Now that the 5th Edition Players Hand Book (PHB) is with us it seems fitting to look at how these rules directly translates to The World of Porth and its denizens.  It seemed logical to start with something which came up a couple of weeks ago, that being the different schools/orders of magic and their effects on those who practice the arcane arts.

However, before I do that I need to point a few things out to avoid confusion and comparison with other Dungeons and Dragons campaign settings.  Not all magic users belong to an established school or order and there is no law which states that they must do so. Having said that it is common custom for affiliated mages to destroy any wild magicians who are considered to be a threat.  Therefore affiliation to one of the established orders will give you some protection from your colleagues on a day to day basis.

Affiliated mages do not all fit the stereotype that their order is known for, e.g. not all of Draegor’s Order of Shadows dress in black robes and have binding infernal pacts with demons etc. (although a high number of them do).  Unlike Krynn where you can tell a wizard solely by the colour of his robes Porth is less stringent and more diversified.

The other thing to keep in mind is that there has already been a Wizard War which lasted decades and caused unbelievable suffering and misery for everyone on Porth.  No one wants to see that again and this has led to a strong feeling of Détente between the various factions.  It also led to the creation of the Wizard high council who tend to be very swift and merciless when it comes to those who do not operate to maintain the situation for the greater good.

Order of Gothgarin

Leader: Thalmanicus the Pure
Official dress: Robes of White, Pastel Blue or light Green.

The order of Gothgarin is the “good guys” of the Wizard world.  Named after their founder Gothgarin who was lost in time for centuries until appearing and then being one of the main reasons for the Wizard War kicking off in the first place!  After the death of Gothgarin the order got its act together and stopped persecuting other Wizards.  They do not allow Warlocks to join the order unless the pact is with a known Arch Fey.

Thalmanicus has a second tier seat on the Wizard High Council as Gothgarin’s place as part of “The Three” went to Ramalin Delgarto following Gothgarin’s death.

Coven of Fire

Leader: Ramalin Delgarto
Official dress: Plain Red Robes.

To understand the nature of the Coven of Fire and its members one must look to the mythical background of its leader; Ramalin Delgarto.  The story goes that Ramalin was an average wizard of no particular note but following a drastic shift in the magic weave of the planet he found himself an Abjurer; and was consequently locked off from other types of magic, most notably that of Evocation.  Incensed by this twist of fate Ramalin set out on a quest to regain his lost powers.  The details of this quest remain shrouded in mystery and are referenced by others as “The Abjuration Agenda”.  Ramalin and those in his party would emerge centuries later with Ramalin as the first ever sorcerer.

The Coven of Fire remains to this day the premier order of sorcerers and Ramalin continues to lead it as he does not age and is sustained by the power of the magic within him.  There are no Wizards in the coven but there are a number of Warlocks.  Coven members always dress in plain red robes so are generally easy to spot.

The Porthian School

Leader: Cortan
Official dress: Highly colourful robes and outfits.

The Porthian School is the term used for the various institutions who declare allegiance to Cortan the Master Mage of Porth and leader of the Wizard Council.  Some of these are actual schools but many others are lone mages who may only have the odd apprentice as far as teaching is concerned.  The Porthian mage is sworn to uphold the balance of magic power and to further the boundaries of magical development and invention.

On his ascension to the post of Master Mage Cortan began a reformation of magic and its practical use and ushered in an age of learning and understanding which was sadly brought down by the Wizard Wars and the change in attitude that brought about in the general populace.

Cortan has been Master Mage for over 4 millennia.  It has not gone unnoticed by many that a human should not live that long.

Order of Shadows

Leader: Unknown (formerly Draegor).
Official dress: Black leather armour, black hooded cloaks/robes.

The Order of Shadows sounds ominous and that’s because it is.  Its ranks are filled with Tiefling Warlocks, Arcane Tricksters, Dark Sorcerers and Evil Wizards.  The Order of Shadows are specialists at the darker side of the arcane arts especially conjuration, necromancy and foul enchantments.

The Order tends to work in the background and don’t like those flashy lightning bolts and fireballs, preferring the less obvious Power Word Stun and Kill.  Subtlety is their means of getting what they want from who they want.  If they are involved in more clandestine operations they will wear anything to blend in and remain unseen.

With the death of Draegor it is unknown who is in charge of the Order and their seat at the Wizard Council is filled by an “ambassador” known as Zoran Warstar.

Truth Seekers

Leader: Madrack the Mage
Official robes: Midnight Blue robes with silver braid.

There is an old adage that history is written by the victors and it is nowhere more true than in respect to Madrack the Mage.  Having been vanquished and imprisoned by the Dark Cleric following the Monster Wars it would take over a thousand years for the truth to become known and Madrack to become vindicated.  Cursed with eternal life by Hela herself Madrack was at one point the Master Mage of Porth until Cortan ascended to the post during Madrack’s apparent death at the hands of Lendorian Cord.

The Truth Seekers are the most tolerant of all the various conclaves and welcome anyone who has magical talent into their order.  Madrack now resides in his citadel in the South of Thane.
